There are 5 African countries competing in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which is not surprising considering that Africa sees very little snowfall in comparison to many Northern Hemisphere countries. Eritrea, Morocco, Madagascar, and Ghana all sent athletes to compete in the Alpine Skiing events, while Nigeria had an athlete partake in the Cross Country Ski events.
Olympic women’s figure skating is by far the most popular and most watched of Winter Olympics sports, and this year’s edition is no different. Thursday is the final of the women’s individual events, with 15 year old Kamila Velieva the favourite for gold and while her Russian Olympic Committee teammate, 17 year old Alexandra Trusova is the other favourite. The pairs’ finals will be taking place this weekend, which is another not to be missed event this year. Speed skating is an exciting event to look forward to this weekend, with the women’s 1000m final taking place on Thursday, followed by the men’s final on Friday.
This weekend also see’s two women bobsleigh finals and as well as the men’s four man. The Germans have dominated this sport and will hope to retain their gold medals that they claimed four years ago, but they will have to keep an eye out on the ever present Canadian and American teams. Likewise the German women’s team will have the same aspirations as the four man men’s teams.
Biathlon is a winter sport to not miss out on, it consists of cross country-skiing and shooting. It is a race over a specified distance with various targets to shoot at across the course. France and Germany have already won gold in two of the individual events, while Norway won Gold in the mixed event. With the mass event still to come over the weekend for both men and women, it will be tough to decide which countries athletes can keep up their performances in the frigid Beijing weather.
