To ensure people take positive steps towards mitigating ineffective waste management, the Abuja Chapter of Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), says that it would begin a public education on effective waste management in Karu, Kuje and Bwari Area Councils respectively.
The vice chairman of the society, Mr. OkobiaEfegbidiki said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Efegbidiki said further that the essence of the campaign was
“At Karu, you see waste being dumped on the streets and if you go into the various inter roads you find out that the health situations of those people are not pleasant.
“The gaseous emissions from the waste like nitric oxide, hydrogen sulphide are pollutants that are dangerous to the human health.
“But the people within those localities don’t know; this is just as a result of negligence in waste management,’’ he said.
He further said that NES had started sensitising the council areas to greenhouse-gas- related issues with a view to enlightening the public on the adverse effects on their health.
He added that NES would educate health officers in the FCT area councils on indices and parameters to look out for in addressing the health challenges caused by poor waste management. (NAN)
