The leadership tussle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State escalated on Thursday as members loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, took control of the party’s state secretariat in Ibadan.
The secretariat, located in the Molete area of the state capital, had been occupied by the faction aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde before the latest development.
Witnesses said supporters of the Wike-backed camp arrived at the premises in large numbers on Thursday morning and assumed control of the facility amid the presence of hundreds of party faithful.
Confirming the development, the Chairman of the PDP in Oyo State, Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, maintained that the takeover was carried out by the legitimate leadership of the party.
Rejecting suggestions that the action was the work of a faction, Akinoso insisted that those now occupying the secretariat were the authentic PDP leadership in the state.
According to him, the group successfully took possession of the premises on Thursday morning and remains in control of the party office.
The development is the latest episode in the internal power struggle within the PDP, reflecting the continuing rivalry between camps loyal to Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
