In furtherance to the measure to address the deficit in public transportation in Abuja, the nation’s capital city, the FCT minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike yesterday flagged off the commencement of the construction of Central Business District (CBD) Bus/Taxi terminal.
Prior to this development, Wike had flagged off construction of two bus terminals- one in Mabushi, and the other one in Kugbo Districts of Abuja, with the aim to provide terminal infrastructures and passenger facilities, which are generally lacking within in FCT.
Speaking during the official flag-off ceremony, the minister said the various bus terminals when completed, will be linked to the expanded the road infrastructure in the city.
He assured that the FCT Administration will by next year formally commission the three bus and taxi terminals under construction as the contractor has promised to deliver them.
He said: “Abuja is a beautiful city. By the grace of God, through the support of Mr. President, we have continued to expand the road infrastructure. What we are trying to do is to integrate and improve our transport system. It is going to cut off all these so-called one-chance crime, that is always committed.
“Part of what we are doing today is the establishment of robust bus and taxi terminals, that you can go there and say “I’m going to Gwagwalada” and we are aware if anything happens, this is the vehicle and this is the driver that would be held responsible.
“Also, you can come here and relax yourself until when your own bus or taxi will take you out, with all the modern facilities. Sometimes when we go train station overseas, we see the facilities, restaurants, people go and watch films, people just relax.”
He continued: “ I can assure all of you that by the grace of God that, this Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President like I have said severally, is not just by talking, it is by reality, as seeing is believing.
“I believe by the grace of God, next year as the contractor has promised us, we will formally commission these three bus and taxi terminals to the glory of God.”
The contractor and CEO, Planet Projects, Engr. Biodun Otunola, said the bus terminal provides world class facilities for the safety, security, convenience and good travel experience for the commuters.
He assured that with adequate funding, the company will ensure timely delivery of the project.
