The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has attributed the rapid pace of infrastructural development in the nation’s capital to the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during an extensive inspection tour of several key project sites on Wednesday, the Minister emphasized that while funding is essential, the “Renewed Hope” administration’s success is driven primarily by political commitment and the prudent management of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
A major highlight of the tour was the inspection of the Nigerian Law School, Abuja campus, where the FCT administration is currently constructing staff housing and student hostels.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the completion of 10 fully furnished bungalows for staff.
However, he delivered a mixed verdict on the student accommodation projects:
Female Hostel: The Minister commended the contractor for high-quality work and steady progress, with a handover date set for November.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the male hostel, noting that while the quality was acceptable, it lagged behind the female wing despite both contracts being mobilized simultaneously.
”This is the first time a government is making a deliberate effort to provide basic infrastructure for the Law School.
“We believe this will solve the chronic accommodation challenges and allow for increased student enrollment,” Wike stated.
He also visited the N5 road project handled by Julius Berger, confirming it is 100% completed.
He announced that the project is slated for inauguration during the third anniversary of the President’s administration.
Additionally, contractors at a major bridge site near the Fire Service station assured the Minister that the project would be completed within five months.
Wike praised the structural integrity of the work, describing it as “very high quality.”
Responding to questions regarding how the FCT maintains its current momentum amidst nationwide fiscal concerns, Wike noted that the administration only awards contracts it has the funds to finish.
”It is not just about the money; it is about commitment. You can have all the money in the world, but without commitment, nothing is achieved.
“With a President who provides this much support, there is simply no room for failure or excuses”, he stated.
On the political front, ahead of the upcoming PDP Convention, Wike dismissed rumors of “factions” within the party.
While acknowledging that some individuals might be dissatisfied, he maintained that there is only “one PDP.”
He clarified that the convention would proceed as scheduled to meet the INEC timeline for primaries (April 23 – May 13), noting that the administrative necessity of a convention does not prevent ongoing reconciliation efforts.
