The winner of this year’s Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC Chairmnship Cup will go home with the sum of two hundred thousand naria (N200, 000. 00) as prize money with a trophy.
The AMAC Sports Officer, Mr Dauda Pascal Dongo disclosed this to our reporter yesterday at the Area 3 Playground, one of the venues of the championship.
Mr Dongo who said that the championship Cup is aimed at discovering grassroots talents in the round leather game within the 12 wards of AMAC, added that in order to achieve its purpose, players who ply their trades in the national leagues are not allowed to participate.
“Our aim is to achieve grassroots sports development in the FCT. We want to discover new talents from the grassroots and that is why we restricted every league player not to be part of this tournament. The tournament is meant for those who are in the grassroots, the village players who do not have the opportunity to come to the city to showcase their skills so that we will be able to discover new talents.
“The tournament has been on for long but we are trying to revive it again. That is why we are playing it at this time when the NPFL and other leagues are on break. 24 teams are participating in this year’s championship. We restricted it to 24 in the 12 wards in the AMAC. That makes it two teams from each ward totalling 24 teams. The final, all things being equal, will hold on Sunday, 3rd December.
“The prizes at stake is that the winner is going home with N200, 000, the runner up N150, 000 while the 2nd runner up goes home with N100, 000. The winner of course will also go home with a trophy and medals.
“The tournament is an annual event and is sponsored by the AMAC Chairman but organised by the Sports Unit of the Abuja Area Municipal Council, AMAC.
“The tournament is an open competition. Any age can participate but the age limit is from 18 to 25 years,” Mr Dongo concluded
The championship kicked off on Tuesday. In yesterday’s first match, Karshi Hawks FC defeated Jiwa FC by 3-2.
