The Adamawa Concerned Women in Politics(ACWP) jas charged Nigerian women to do their best in occupying their rightful spaces in the scheme of things in the country’s political and governance structure.
ACWP President, Hajiya Zainab Abubakar gave the charge in Yola, Friday when the Association paid an advocacy visit to the lone female legislator and majority leader of the Adamawa state House of Assembly, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno.
She described the female legislator’s doggedness in political landscape in the state as a rare ‘hope and inspiration for womenfolk in Nigeria’s growing democracy.
Abubakar disclosed that the ACWP in partnership with Garga Foundation with support of the International Foundation For Electoral Systems(IFES) is poised to advancing women’s participation and leadership in politics.
She added that the organization was established to purposely address the underrepresentation of women in the political landscape of the state and are committed to breaking the barriers that hinders them from partaking fully in governance.
“With the backing of Garga Foundation and IFES,ACWP is steadfast in its mission to empower women not only to participate in politics but to also take lead.
“We believe with your support as one of us (Woman) and the backing of the House of Assembly,our advocacy will yield significant and lasting change.
“While we acknowledge and appreciate Governor Fintiri’s government for the gender sensitive policies,we also wish further backings for our initiatives, particularly as we aspire to see a woman become the next Governor of Adamawa state”, she stated.
In her response, Hon. Kate Mamuno, expressed gratitude to the women group for the recognition, urging them to feel at home whenever the need arises.
Mamuno, who is the majority leader and member representing Demsa state constituency promised to work assiduously with the Organization in pushing forward the womenfolk inclusion in all human endeavors calling on women to come out en mass to contribute their quota in nation building.
She also encouraged women to always be courageous and focus on whatever they do, as ot will said will take them to higher positions in the society.
She however, acknowledged the effort of Governor Fintiri’s government for allowing women to be elected as vice chairmen in the 21 local government areas in the state, adding that women remain grateful for the recognition and opportunity to serve.
Earlier in his speech, Aminu Adamu, Project Coordinator, Garga Foundation reiterated that the Foundation and its partners would always not hesitate in providing enabling support for the women being the mothers of the universe.
Adamu therefore appealed to the lawmaker to use her good office in supporting the Association, so that women groups may have more legislative backings for their activities.
