World Cup Shocker: Cape Verde Stun Spain with Historic Goalless Draw

Tournament debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, holding reigning European champions Spain to a remarkable 0-0 draw in their Group H opener at Atlanta Stadium, Georgia.

The result marked a historic moment for the Blue Sharks, a nation of just over 550,000 people making its first-ever appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

At the heart of the famous result was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose heroic display frustrated the Spanish attack throughout the encounter. The 40-year-old shot-stopper made seven crucial saves and became the first goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his World Cup debut.

As expected, Spain dominated possession from the outset, controlling 74 percent of the ball and camped for long periods in the Cape Verde half. However, Luis de la Fuente’s side found it difficult to break down a disciplined and well-organised defensive unit.

Marshalled by centre-backs Pico Lopes and Diney Borges, Cape Verde absorbed wave after wave of Spanish pressure, forcing La Roja to rely largely on efforts from distance.

Whenever Spain found a way through, Vozinha stood firm. The experienced goalkeeper produced a series of outstanding saves to deny Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal and other Spanish attackers.

In search of a breakthrough, De la Fuente turned to his bench, introducing teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and winger Nico Williams in the second half. The arrival of Yamal added another layer of intrigue, with the 18-year-old attempting to unlock a defence inspired by a 40-year-old goalkeeper enjoying the game of his life.

Spain intensified the pressure late on and finished with 27 shots, but Cape Verde refused to buckle.

The Blue Sharks almost completed a fairytale victory deep into stoppage time when Diney Borges rose highest from a corner, only to send his header narrowly wide of the target.

At the final whistle, scenes of jubilation erupted among the Cape Verde players and supporters. Vozinha, named Man of the Match, dropped to his knees in celebration before being embraced by teammates after securing one of the most memorable results in the country’s football history.

While Spain will look to bounce back in their next Group H fixture against Saudi Arabia on June 21, Cape Verde have already announced themselves on the world stage, proving they belong among football’s elite with a courageous and unforgettable performance.
