The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has announced that elections for the 17 Local Government Chairmen and Councillors will be held on June 6, 2026.
The announcement was made by Mohammed Grema Nguru, Permanent Member 1 of YBSIEC, during a crucial stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu on Wednesday.
The meeting brought together security chiefs, political party leaders under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and members of the press.
Nguru stated that the election timeline had received official approval from Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.
He outlined the commission’s roadmap, emphasizing the need for collaboration.
Nguru called on the media to ensure widespread voter education and urged security agencies to guarantee safety at all polling units.
He confirmed that the commission would soon issue election guidelines to all political parties, urging them to present candidates of “quality repute and substance” to ensure good governance at the grassroots.
He detailed the eligibility criteria for aspirants: for Chairmanship, candidates must be at least 30 years old, Councillorship, candidates must be at least 25 years old.
He added that, all positions are open to any eligible resident, without gender bias, and candidates must be of sound mind, not bankrupt, and residents of their local community.
“The minimum eduucational standard of a school certificate or its equivalent is required. All aspirants must undergo security screening.
“The nomination fees are set at N300,000 for Chairmanship, N250,000 for Vice-Chairmanship, and N200,000 for Councillorship.” He said.
Nguru reaffirmed YBSIEC’s commitment to conducting a transparent process.
“The State Independent Electoral Commission will therefore take responsibility to undertake, organise, and supervise the local government council election, which shall be free, fair, credible, and peaceful,” he declared.
He concluded by soliciting the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure the success of the elections and invited all qualified citizens to participate in the electoral process.
