Yobe schools to reopen Jan. 5

Following a high-level security meeting convened by Governor Mai Mala Buni, the Yobe State Government has announced the reopening of all schools on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The decision concludes a period of temporary closure enacted as a proactive security measure.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Governor Idi Barde Gubana at the Government House, brought together heads of security agencies, traditional rulers including the Emir of Fika, and key education stakeholders to deliberate on the Safe Schools Policy.
In his remarks, Governor Buni reassured parents and guardians that the safety of students remains the administration’s top priority.
“We will continue to work closely with relevant security agencies, community leaders, and education stakeholders to sustain peace and stability in Yobe State,” he stated, emphasizing education as a critical pillar for development.
Briefing the press after the closed-door deliberations, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Associate Professor Abba Adam Idris, confirmed the reopening date.
He disclosed that comprehensive security arrangements have been finalized with the cooperation of school managements, parents, and stakeholders.
The Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), affirmed that extensive consultations led to the consensus for a safe resumption.
“After extensive consultations with security agencies and education stakeholders, it was agreed that students can safely resume,” he said, noting that specific security measures would remain undisclosed for strategic reasons.
The expanded meeting included broad representation from the state’s education sector and all members of the State Security Council, underscoring a unified approach to ensuring a secure academic environment.
