Parents of the separated conjoined female twins at the Federal Medical Centre Yola have expressed gratitude to God Almighty and the management of the hospital for the successful surgical operation.
Mallam Muhammad Ramat and his wife,Kellu Adamu who heals from Gamburo Kasuwan-shanu in Maiduguri, Borno State in an interview with journalists said the twins were discovered to be conjoined at birth through cesarean section on Monday 14th May,2018.
They both admitted that the hospital bills recorded were settled by the management saying they remain grateful and indebted to all that contributed in one way or the other to the breakthrough.
Earlier at a press conference in Yola on Friday, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital (FMC Yola),Professor AUWAL Muhammad Abubakar said that the success story on the separation voyage of the omphalopagus (conjoined twins) was fruitful as a result of team work of twenty six medical professionals led by him.
Professor Abubakar stated that this circumstance do occur very rare saying one case is being registered out of 150,000–200,000 normal birth delivery cases and that the joining position varies from one another.
Abubakar who appealed to Federal and state Governments to invest heavily in health sector explained that it will go a long way in curtailing the medical trips abroad by Nigerians.
He added that the surgical operation took the team four hours to effectively separate the conjoined twins who have been in the hospital for four weeks.
He also confirmed that the twins and their parents may be discharged from hospital in the next two weeks if medical observations and examinations allowed stressing that they all in stable condition presently under closed care.
