The Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has commenced a 21-day training programme for 250 secondary school teachers selected from the 14 local government areas of the state.
The training is being conducted under the Global Standard Teacher Transformation Programme (GSTTP) as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning across Zamfara.
The programme is also aimed at supporting the implementation of reforms introduced following the declaration of a state of emergency on education by Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly in the areas of teacher quality, school leadership and learning outcomes.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training in Gusau on Monday, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Maryam Shantali, said the participants would be equipped with skills needed to meet global standards in teaching.
Shantali said the training was part of the government’s broader efforts to reposition the education sector through teacher development, improved quality assurance and the provision of conducive learning environments.
She said the state government had embarked on comprehensive reforms aimed at strengthening educational institutions, improving quality assurance mechanisms, upgrading school infrastructure and implementing strategic policies to improve learning outcomes.
> “Today, Zamfara is witnessing remarkable progress as we embark on comprehensive reforms which include strengthening our institutions, improving quality assurance mechanisms resulting in qualified teachers, upgrading school infrastructure and implementing strategic education policies,” she said.
The Permanent Secretary urged the participating teachers to take the training seriously and make effective use of the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme.
She stressed that teachers had a critical role to play in shaping the future of children in Zamfara State, describing them as custodians of quality education.
“You are the custodians of sound and better education for our children. You are urged to utilise this opportunity to learn more than what is expected for a better tomorrow of the state,” she said.
