Zulum: No cause for alarm over rising water levels at Alau Dam

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has reassured residents that there is no cause for alarm over the rising water levels at Alau Dam.

The governor’s statement came amid widespread fear of flooding among Maiduguri residents following recent heavy rainfall.

Zulum made the remarks after inspecting the ongoing reconstruction work at Alau Dam, near Maiduguri.

While acknowledging the concerns over potential devastating floods due to overflow from the dam, Zulum emphasized that the situation is under control.

He noted that new channels have been opened to allow water flow, leading to a drop of about 4 inches in the dam’s water level over the past few days—a trend expected to continue.

“Based on our engineering assessment, we have concluded that there is no cause for alarm,” Zulum stated.

“However, we cannot predict the future, so we will continue monitoring the situation closely. The contractor is doing a good job.”

The governor issued a stern warning to residents in flood-prone areas, urging them to avoid dumping refuse in drainage systems and constructing buildings on waterways.

“Most importantly, I want to warn the people of this state to desist from building on waterways. They must exercise caution,” he said.

“If you have drainage in front of your house, ensure it is kept clean at all times.”

Zulum revealed that his administration would review the state’s master plan to identify and rectify distortions, particularly concerning water channels.

“We must go back to the drawing board, examine the master plan, and ensure all tributaries and waterways are cleared to allow proper water flow into the main canal,” he said.

“Enforcing environmental standards may be tough, but we have no other option.”
