Wife of Kaduna State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Mukhtar Ramalan Yero said a total of 119 women die daily from complications related to pregnancy, labour or child birth across the country.

According to her, about 241 new-borns die annually in Nigeria, saying neonatal mortality rate is 40 per 1,000 live births.

The wife of the governor disclosed this at a Town Hall Meeting on Maternal and Child Health Care organized by Advocacy Nigeria and Sure-P kaduna.

She expressed worry over the rate of women that deliver babies at home as most of them ignore the trained health care birth attendant.

Hajiya Ramallan Yero represented by Commissioner of women Affairs, Mrs. Comfort Amwe urged women particularly those in rural communities to always patronize health care services within their communities.

“ Our major concern is to reduce maternal mortality even though government cannot do it all alone, there is need to work closely with all stakeholders like Advocacy Nigeria to achieve goal 5 of the MDGs.

“If we work together, the problems of maternal and child death would reduce to barest minimum in kaduna. We call for the cooperation of statkeholders, and women,” she said.

She explained that United Nations described maternal Mortality as death of a woman while pregnant 42 days of termination of pregnancy irrespective of the duration and size of the pregnancy.
