2019: CAN denies endorsing Gov. Abubakar as candidate

Date:

From Ahmad Mohammed, Bauchi

The youth wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) Bauchi state chapter has disowned a report published in a national daily, not Peoples Daily which alleged that the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN endorsed the incumbent governor of the state, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar as their candidate in the 2019 governorship election.
Addressing newsmen yesterday, in Bauchi the chairman of the association, Mako Gwamis flanked by his secretary Nenrot G. Duklah said it was not true as stated by the purported report that said Governor Abubakar was adopted by CAN leadership during their Christmas homage to Government House as their candidate.
He said during the visit that CAN chairman didn’t make any endorsement and the religious body will not endorse anyone without the collective consent, consultation and tacit approval of the entire Christians in the state.
Mako said the visit was a normal annual tradition visit to leaders to pray for them and the country and to congratulated them for witnessing another Christmas celebration it has no any political under tone.
He said , the present administration has allegedly neglected Christians faithful in political appointments, sponsorship of pilgrimage to Jerusalem like they enjoyed during the past regimes in spite of their population that could justify the CAN’s endorsement of the governor,
Mako said “ You will agree with me that since the inception of this administration Christian in Bauchi State were neglected and not carried along in the scheme of things in the government of his Excellency Mohammed A. Abubakar despite the fact that there are reasonable percentage of Christian who are competent to occupy some of the position were not appropriate unlike the two previous administrations”.
He said “ Hardly would you find a local Government area in Bauchi State that there is no quite number of Christian. You will agree with me that it is not rosy for Christian under this present administration”. He decried.
He explained clearly that spiritual leaders always sit on the fence are not partisan im politics, even if they would adopt a candidate, they will do that after wide consultation.”
