2023 election: Moving materials will be huge logistics nightmare – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it has a huge logistics nightmare on its hands in transporting sensitive materials for the 2023 election.

The Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said this on Monday while appearing on Channels TV, adding that the logistics used for Osun and Ekiti governorship election will not be sustainable for the 2023 general elections.

Okoye states that the electoral commission will have to review material storage and logistics with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to finalise its logistic pathway for sensitive materials to 36 states, including the FCT.

Okoye said “We cannot use Osun and Ekiti elections as a measure of what will happen in 2023. This is because those were stand alone elections, we moved the materials with the Nigerian Air Force for these states.

“But for the 2023 election, we are going to have over 95m ballot papers printed for the presidential election, the same thing for the senatorial election. It’s going to be a huge logistics nightmare.

“We have not had an opportunity of sitting with CBN to review issues surrounding moving our materials with Nigerian Air Force, but we are going to do that if at the end of the day we’re not satisfied with the arrangement, we’ll have to look for a new pathway on how to manage logistics during the 2023 election.

“The arrangement for Osun and Ekiti States would not be sustainable for the 2023 election. Moving sensitive materials to 36 states, including FCT is way different and we need to look for a completely different logistic pathway on how to deal with that problem.”
