2027: Ex-Minister, Jaji screened for Taraba gov, pledges sustainable growth

Date:

From Godwin Agia, Jalingo

Former Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, has been screened for the Taraba State governorship race at the APC Kaduna State House on Sunday, May 10, 2026, as the party begins its screening process ahead of the primaries.
Jaji, an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University with a degree in Building and a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Building, said his decision to run stems from a desire to reposition Taraba for sustainable growth, and lamented the state’s slow development 35 years after its creation.
He also backed the party’s adoption of direct primaries, arguing that it allows aspirants to test their popularity openly.
“Rather than sit and complain about the backwardness of our state after thirty-five years of its creation, I would rather throw my hat into the ring and contest.
“This is democracy. With direct primaries, you are bound to test your popularity and acceptability rather than rely on games and gimmicks associated with indirect primaries or consensus candidacy,” he said.
When asked about facing a sitting governor, he said the state’s record speaks for itself. He pointed to Taraba’s debt profile and human capital indicators as evidence that new leadership is needed.
“Go and check the developmental index of my dear state. Check our debt profile and human capital indicators; the records are there. I am tired of complaining. I would rather join the race to salvage my home state than sit on the fence,” he added.
Jaji praised the conduct of the screening panel, singling out chairman Dr. Benjamin Obi Nwoye for leading a process he described as professional and ethical.
“I must candidly appreciate the humility and professionalism of the committee. Dr. Benjamin Obi Nwoye led committee impressed me deeply. Their commitment to ethical standards, simplicity, and camaraderie was commendable,” he said.
He expressed hope that the level of organization seen at the national screening would be replicated at the state level to ensure a credible primary process.
Jaji further noted that his ambition is not about personal gain but about rebuilding Taraba and restoring hope for its people, and promised to focus on infrastructure, human capital development, and economic growth if elected.
Peoplesdaily reports that the outcome of the screening is expected in the coming days, ahead of the APC governorship primaries in Taraba State.
