The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has commenced a major internal reorganization ahead of the 2027 general elections, dissolving all party caucuses across the state’s 16 local government areas with immediate effect.
The decision, announced by the state chapter on Monday, is being seen as part of efforts to reposition the party and broaden its political base ahead of the next general elections.
In a statement, the state Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, said the dissolution followed resolutions reached by the State Executive Committee (SEC) and other key stakeholders during a closed-door meeting with former Senate President and PDP leader, Bukola Saraki, during his recent visit to the state.
Adewara said the restructuring was necessary as the party begins preparations for the 2027 elections.
“The journey towards 2027 has effectively commenced,” he said, adding that the party intends to “refresh its structures, bring in new hands, broaden participation and create a more effective and inclusive political machinery capable of delivering victory for the PDP at all levels.”
The move comes amid growing political realignments in Kwara, particularly reports of possible collaboration between the PDP and members of the APC G15, now known as The Otoge Progressives (TOP).
PDP stakeholders had, following an extraordinary meeting last Thursday, reportedly mandated Saraki to commence merger discussions with leaders of the group.
The dissolution of the existing caucuses could therefore provide the party with room to accommodate new political entrants as it works towards rebuilding its structures across the state.
However, the PDP described the decision primarily as an internal administrative measure aimed at strengthening the party.
The party said the State Executive Committee had the authority to take steps considered necessary to reposition and reorganize its structures in the interest of its members and electoral prospects.
While thanking members of the dissolved caucuses for their contributions, the party assured them that their experience remained valuable to the organisation.
Adewara also urged members to remain calm and united, disclosing that arrangements were already underway for the recruitment, constitution and inauguration of new caucuses across the state.
The development adds to the growing signs of political restructuring in Kwara ahead of the 2027 elections, with major parties positioning themselves for possible alliances, defections and realignments.
