2027: LP not part of Ibadan opposition meeting- Rep Agbese

The Labour Party (LP) has distanced itself from reports of an opposition gathering held in Ibadan, insisting it is currently focused on internal processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The clarification was made by Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the party’s National Convention Media Sub-Committee, during an interaction with journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Agbese stated that neither the leadership nor members of the party participated in any such opposition summit, stressing that the LP is concentrating on preparations for its National Convention scheduled for April 28, 2026.
According to him, the party is prioritising efforts to strengthen its internal structures and ensure cohesion ahead of the next election cycle.
“We were not in Ibadan for any summit. As a party, we are focused on our National Convention and on strengthening our internal processes ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
His comments come against the backdrop of a reported meeting involving opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), where discussions reportedly centred on forming a coalition and presenting a joint presidential candidate.
However, Agbese maintained that the Labour Party is not engaged in any coalition talks at this stage, noting that internal consolidation remains its immediate priority.
He emphasised that building a strong and united party structure is essential before considering external political alignments, adding that discipline and organisational stability are key to effective participation in the electoral process.
Agbese further assured that the party is committed to developing a credible platform capable of meeting the expectations of Nigerians as political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027.
He added that while alliances are a feature of democratic politics, they must be approached cautiously and should not undermine internal unity.
The lawmaker reiterated that the LP remains focused on its convention and long-term strategy to position the party for future electoral contests, despite ongoing realignments aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
