The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied allegations of illegal payments and favouritism in its candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that all funds received by the party were properly documented and paid into its designated account.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., the party described reports questioning its financing and candidate selection procedures as misinformation aimed at undermining its growing political influence.
The NDC explained that, as a relatively new political party without elected officials such as a president, governors or ministers, it had relied on contributions, levies and donations from aspirants, members, stakeholders and supporters to finance its operations.
According to the party, the fundraising arrangement is provided for in its constitution, while all contributions were paid directly into the party’s designated account and managed by the appropriate organs.
“The National Leader of our party neither demanded nor received any money from any aspirant for personal use. All funds were duly received, receipted and accounted for,” the statement said.
The NDC also pledged to provide a full account of its finances in accordance with the Electoral Act and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
NDC Rejects Claims Party Tickets Were Sold
Addressing allegations surrounding its candidate selection process, the party denied selling tickets to aspirants, saying some candidates received nominations without payment.
It said its presidential and vice-presidential tickets were offered free of charge based on the party’s assessment of the candidates, adding that similar considerations were extended to several other candidates.
The NDC argued that raising funds through membership subscriptions, levies and voluntary contributions was necessary to build a nationwide opposition structure and prepare candidates for elections across several constituencies.
It maintained that its operations were financed through legitimate contributions rather than public funds.
The party challenged anyone claiming to have made payments to individuals outside its designated account to provide evidence, assuring that it would investigate any credible allegation.
“The NDC will not shield anyone,” the statement said, adding that the party was considering legal action against individuals it accused of spreading false allegations.
The NDC further defended the integrity of its National Leader, stating that he does not receive a salary from the party and had not personally solicited money from individuals who interacted with him since the party’s formation.
It alleged that the accusations were part of a campaign by political opponents seeking to damage the party’s reputation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, due process and justice, urging its members, the media and the public to disregard what it described as false narratives surrounding its financing and candidate selection process.
