The push to forge a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections has gained fresh momentum following an alliance between the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives and the G-100 initiative.

The partnership is aimed at bringing opposition parties, political leaders and presidential aspirants together to negotiate a common political arrangement capable of mounting a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi (ADC-Bayelsa), disclosed the development on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting with a delegation of G-100 in Abuja.

Agbedi described the meeting as the “consummation” of the partnership between the caucus and G-100, saying both sides had agreed to combine their efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and provide voters with a credible alternative in 2027.

He appealed to opposition politicians to place the collective interest above individual ambitions, arguing that unity would give the opposition a better chance of defeating the APC.

“We had just had a successful meeting, and in the meeting we concluded that this is the consummation of the alliance of the caucus and the G-100, fusing into one to ensure that we play an active role in enriching democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

Agbedi added: “I want to call on all members of the opposition, no matter the party you belong to, no matter your ambition, that there is strength in unity and that the opposition should unite to ensure that we wrestle power from the APC in 2027.”

The lawmaker said the economic and social challenges confronting Nigerians had made the need for a coordinated opposition more compelling.

He maintained that disagreements among opposition parties should not be allowed to frustrate efforts to present Nigerians with an alternative government.

Also speaking, leader of the G-100 delegation, Salihu Lukman, said the initiative was established in response to the fragmentation of opposition parties and the lack of effective coordination among political actors.

Lukman said the movement was seeking to persuade opposition leaders and presidential aspirants to negotiate a common political arrangement instead of pursuing separate interests.

According to him, failure to achieve such unity could result in a repeat of the 2023 elections, when divisions among opposition forces helped the ruling party maintain its advantage.

“As opposition parties, we seem to be fragmented, and if we continue the way we are going, we are almost going to replay the 2023 scenario. It is almost like a case of handing over victory to the ruling party, and then we go back to square one,” Lukman said.

He assured that G-100 was prepared to facilitate negotiations among opposition parties and political leaders as part of efforts to establish a united platform ahead of the 2027 polls.

Meanwhile, Lukman announced the postponement of a planned summit involving opposition parties and leaders from Tuesday to August 31.

He explained that the additional time would enable G-100 to expand its consultations and bring more political actors and Nigerians into the proposed coalition-building process.
