Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest before members of the State Executive Council and key leaders of the All Progressives Congress.
Also in attendance were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a unanimous decision by stakeholders, noting that Hamzat possesses the competence and experience required to lead the state.
“We received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of party leaders to formally declare his intention. It was a unanimous position that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted Hamzat’s track record over the past seven years, citing his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance as key attributes that set him apart.
He also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping both his political journey and his working relationship with Hamzat.
Describing the deputy governor as “well-prepared” and “tested,” Sanwo-Olu said the decision followed wide consultations within party ranks and government circles.
“This is a deputy governor who has been ready for leadership from day one. He understands the system and has earned the trust of stakeholders,” he added.
The development signals early political alignment within the APC in Lagos as activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
