A devastating canoe capsize has resulted in a significant loss of life, with 25 persons confirmed dead and 14 others missing.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The canoe, which was carrying 52 passengers, capsized at approximately 7:48 PM on January 3, 2026, was traveling from Adiyani town in Guri LGA of Jigawa State to Garbi town in Nguru LGA, Yobe.
It was gathered that the passengers were reportedly returning from a day of fishing, farming, and local trading in Adiyani.
Responding to the development, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) coordinated efforts that led to the rescue of 13 survivors.
However, the search and rescue operations for the 14 missing individuals are ongoing, involving security agencies, emergency responders, and local volunteers.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Muhammad Goje, stated that the agency has deployed additional search and rescue teams from Bade and Nguru to support the operation.
Also, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has condoled with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as a monumental loss.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Maman Mohammad, the Governor cautioned against overloading of canoes and vehicles to guard against avoidable accidents.
He said: “It is with a heavy heart that I received the shocking and devastating news of the boat mishap in Nguru local government area, which claimed 25 lives, with 14 others still missing and 13 rescued.”
The Governor prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and directed that all necessary medical and logistical support be provided immediately for the treatment of survivors.
