Federal Government has given Certificate of Occupancy (CoO) of three(3) bedroom apartment to super eagle’s team of 1994
Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), after 28years.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, handed over the Certificate of Occupancy (CoO)of the houses to each member of the team on Friday in Abuja .
Fashola said the federal government got to know the promises made since 1994 was not fulfilled after it was reviewed by the minister of Sports, Sunday Dare.
He requested the president to consider and approve the allocation made to redeem those promises inside the ongoing National Housing Programme that is being undertaken in 34 states.
He emphasized that members of the team were asked to select the state they wanted their houses to be as it was not possible to give them in Abuja.
The beneficiaries will get their titled documents and the keys at the sites.
“We planned that this will be done in a conducive environment so that there will be no more loopholes.
“And indeed, we found out that the name of Finidi George was not included and we told Mr President and I’m sure that he will provide remedy for that.’’
Speaking on behalf of his team mates, Augustine Eguavoen thanked the federal government for fulfilling the promise to gift each member of the team after previous administrations had failed to fortified .
“I am so delighted that this finally happened after 28 years. Many administrations have come but have not succeeded in fulfilling the promise. This administration has done extremely well to actualise this promise.”
“On behalf of my colleagues, we are very grateful from the bottom of our hearts because it brings to fore the stanza of our national anthem that says the labour of our heroes shall past never be in vain.”
He urged the current crop of super Eagles to play ith passion and patriotism so that they can also be recognised in the country.
The players presented with CoO are Victor Ikpeba, Chief Anthony Okeleke, Uche Okafor represented by his daughter Tochukwu Okafor, Austine Egwuavon, the coach of the senior team.
Others are Peter Rufai, Steven Elema, Isaac Semitoje, Sunday Oliseh represented by his brother Albert Oliseh.
Peoples Daily called that, the promise was actually made by the then military government of Gen. Sani Abacha, when the Super Eagles Squad won the African Cup of Nations in Tunis, Tunisia, in 1994.
