40,000MW power generation feasible by year 2020, says FG

The Federal Government has said that the target of power generation peaking at 40,000MW by year 2020 is realizable with more capacities coming from Mambilla, Zungeru large hydros, off grid power from solar, wind and more importantly coal to power that will use the abundant coal resources in Nigeria.

A statement by the Deputy Director (Press), Timothy Oyedeji quoted the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr. GodknowsIgali to have made the disclosure while he played host to the team of the body of Permanent Secretaries in the Civil Service on Peer review mission.

He identified the key element of this initiative as it would make the civil service more responsive and accountable to the Nigerian people.

While making his presentation,Igali said the bottom line of his Ministry’s mandate is to provide policy framework for the realization of electricity for domestic and industrial uses of Nigerians.

“For a long time Government has regulated the sector, the attending problems have been with us for long, now the determination of Government is to charge gear and allow the private sector to come in to power”.

Expressing optimism that Nigerians will soon experience uninterrupted power, he said that although Government has not privatize Transmission, with huge investment required in the evacuation of Power, Government is encouraging private sector to come into that sub-sector.

The Head of Service, AlhajiBukarGoniAji commended the manner the leadership of the sector had handled privatization adjudged to be the biggest on the continent; he ascribed this feat to the openness, purposeful and transparent leadership.

He promised to align the civil service with the Transformation Agenda of Mr. President, by religiously implementing Government policies and programmes that are people oriented.

At the interaction segment with the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo commended the Head of Service for upholding ethic of Public Service with passion. He said service delivery is key hence he should leave no stone unturned in his quest for excellence at all times.

He described him as a reformer, whose orientation is in tandem with Transformation through leadership by example.
