High rate of alcoholism, prostitution in Minna worries group

A group, the Joint Islamic Da’awa have called on the Niger state government to as a matter of urgency make efforts to end the prevailing alcoholism, prostitution and immorality in Minna and entire state.
The chairman of the group, Alhaji Haruna Musa made the call yesterday when the clerics held meeting with the Director General of the Bureau for Islamic Affairs in Minna, the state capital.
Musa in their complaint to the government stressed the evil consequences expected in any society, the menace can caused if nothing is done to curb its persistence in a community just as pharmacists offenders be closed down especially those found selling hard drugs for the youths.
The group emphasized on the government to restructure the state liquor licensing board with people’s adequate knowledge, fear of God and persons with integrity.
The group, however, appreciated the governor’s acceptance of the situation and agreeing to find solutions to the menace.
Musa stressed the need to increase the amount of licensing from the current N700,000 to N7 million so as to discourage the dealers of alcohol.
The Director General Bureau for Islamic Affairs, Umar Abdullahi represented by the Director Islamic Religious Affairs, Hajiya Rakiya Adamu Ma’aji, also appreciated the efforts of the association that is of importance to every parent and guidance.
He urged the group not to relent in ensuring better society but advised them to continue to pray for the leaders to have the wisdom to do the right thing and anything contrary will be detrimental to the society.
Abdullahi hinted that measures are in place to amend the situation positively.
The Vice President of Muslim Student Society Niger State area unit Yahaya Mohammed who represented his President, said that the association have less power to execute such mandate without the full support of the government.
He lamented over the alarming rate of alcoholic consumption, prostitution and immorality in the state, called for caution.
