The Commandant General, National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC) Chinedu Nneji has said that respect for human rights is the panacea for peace in the country.
Nneji stated this at the weekend during the 2018 United Nations International Day of Peace tagged: “the right to peace-the declaration of human right at 70”.
He urged Nigerians to value the lives of others and tolerate them.
“We should learn to tolerate one another and live in peace regardless of our political or religious differences. Respect for the rights of others will help all of us to live as one.
“Every 21st Day of September since 1948 is a day for shared aspiration to end conflict in all its forms and to safeguard the human rights of all people. It is a day which the United Nations calls for a 24 hour global ceasefire.”
Dr. Nneji further said that the core mandate of NUPEC is conflict resolution, mediation and mitigation and not security as erroneously conceived in some quarters.
He called on Nigerians to support and cooperate with the government at the centre in curbing all forms of criminalities to bring about peace in the country which is what the United Nations and Peace Corps stands for.
Dr. Nneji assured that the Corps has on ground already qualified personnel who are chattered mediators with developed strategies to handle and resolve any type of crises no matter the complexity.
