Nigeria at 66: Tinubu unveils plan to cut food prices, create jobs with gas-powered industries

Date:

By Egena Sunday Ode

President Bola Tinubu has said his priority is to bring down the cost of living by cutting the cost of producing and moving goods.

In his 66th Independence Day broadcast, Tinubu said prosperity will be measured by what Nigerians feel in markets and factories, not by statistics.

“We have the land and people to feed ourselves,” he said.

How Tinubu plans to cut prices

– Expand mechanised irrigation and dry-season farming
– Improve access to seeds and fertiliser
– Invest in storage to reduce post-harvest losses
– Build and complete roads, railways and ports to link farms to markets

“When a farmer produces more cheaply, when fewer crops are lost between farm and market, when a manufacturer spends less on electricity, all those savings will find their way into market prices,” he said.

Jobs and industries

Tinubu said Nigeria’s young population must become an engine of production.

He listed plans to:

– Use gas to power new industries
– Revive factories in industrial centres
– Expand digital connectivity to underserved communities
– Invest in skills and provide finance for businesses

“I want to see more Nigerians making things. I want to see more Nigerian farms feeding our cities. I want young Nigerians building unicorns here at home,” he said
