Nasarawa lawmaker secures release of 9 prison inmates

A member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), Philip Aruwa Gyunka, (PDP, Akwanga-South), has secured the release of nine inmates from the Lafia prison, who were serving various jail terms.

The inmates regained their freedom after the lawmaker settled their fines.

Addressing journalists shortly after securing the release of the prisoners yesterday, Gyunka said the gesture was to show care, love and concern to humanity, particularly, the less-privileged.

“My heart bleeds for those who, for one reason or the other have been sentenced to prison with option of fines but could not afford such fines”, he said.

He stressed that as a lawmaker, he can never support any person who breaks the law, urging the former inmates to take the opportunity of their regained freedom to transform their lives positively.

“I charge you like Jesus did, go and sin no more; and to those of you who are still serving jail terms, I urge you to learn lessons from your experiences and believe that someday, God will provide the means for your release”, Gyunka stated.

Those who regained their freedom at the Lafia prison were Sunday Gandi-Kadarko, Arigu Anga, Ishaika Jibrin-Alagye, Iliya John, Emmanuel Elum, Anas Mohammed, Emmanuel Musa, Haruna Musa and Michael Yakubu-Daddere.

Before leaving the prison premises, Gyunka also donated a set of table tennis and kits to the remaining inmates, to encourage sporting activities.
