Delta govt. moves to curb child, women mortality

Delta State government at the weekend introduced Newborn Action Method ( DSNAP) in order to end preventable newborn child and pregnant women mortality during child birth in the state.
While it restated its commitment to implement the method to the letters, Secretary to the state Government ( SSG) Barr Chiedu Ebie who spoke to Journalists in Asaba, said that the DSNAP became necessary as available statistics indicated that each year,289, women die while giving birth while an estimated 18,000 children die every day from preventable diseases and circumstances, adding” over 2.9million newborn die during their first days of life each year and the need therefore is inevitable for an accelerated response to the situation and I wish to place it on record the reality and an undeniable fact that the age long ugly phenomenon of women and children mortality has remained not only a tragic affairs but also a very nagging and worrisome issue”
According to the SSG, the every newborn Action Plan launched by WHO and UNICEF in 2014 was a roadmap of strategic actions for ending preventable newborn mortality still birth and reduce maternity mortality, adding that every efforts targeted at ending women and children mortality brought about the understanding that these deaths are index preventable and are only caused by complications related to premature birth,severe infections,low social class, ignorance and unavailability of skilled manpower”
The SSG remarked that the state government has made remarkable efforts in improving the general health and well-being of children aged five years and below through her free maternal and child health care services, adding that the Delta state Contributory Health Scheme which provides free medical care for Pregnant women and children under five years.
