The police yesterday arraigned an applicant, Wilson Igbo, 38, in a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Life Camp, Abuja, for absconding with N138,000 belonging to a businessman.
Igbo, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of joint act and cheating before Senior Magistrate, Mr.Abdulateef Abolaji.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Simon Emmanuel, told the court that Mr.Alieze Peter, of Suleja, Niger, lodged the complaint at the Life Camp Police Station on April 10.
Emmanuel alleged that on March 5, at about 6.30 a.m., the accused person and three others now at large, approached Peter at the Kado Fish Market, Life Camp, Abuja.
He said Igbo and his accomplice deceived the complainant by claiming to be foreigners and that they imported goods, including computers and electronics.
He said the accused collected N138,000 from the complainant with a promise to supply him with computers and electronics.
Emmanuel said the accused failed to deliver the goods and told the complainant that the Nigeria Customs Service had seized his container.
The prosecutor said the accused person and others absconded but Igbo was later arrested at Suleja.
The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Senior Magistrate, Abolaji, admitted the accused to bail for N40,000 and two sureties.
Abolaji ordered that the sureties must have reasonable means of livelihood, with traceable and verifiable work and home address and should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He added that both sureties must deposit their driver’s licences or national identity cards with the court registry and adjourned the matter until April 28 for hearing. (NAN)
