NGO sensitises students on mitigating SGBV in schools, homes

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG), has admonished students in high schools not to allow themselves to be sexually abused by anyone within and outside  school premises.

AEIG’s project officer, Josephine Emeghoghena gave the advice  during a  Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) awareness programme held in Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada are of Abuja.

She explained that the awareness programme was to help in curbing sexual violence and other human abuses in schools and at homes.

According to her, the institution is part of the schools that were selected by the Federal Capital Territory  Universal Basic Education Board (FCT-UBEB) for the NGO to conduct the sensitisation.

Also, the Project Officer noted that  there were a lot of schools that needed the awareness campaign but is been limited to some areas because of funding.

Emeghoghena added that in each of the Six Area Councils one school is being selected for the exercise, since the sensitisation started.

She equally revealed that the major focus was on indigenous schools that are dominated by rural dwellers.

“We intend to achieve a society where there will be less violence among people in their schools and homes, bullying will be curbed and many other social vices.

“Our campaign will end the cases of sexual violence, we want the students to take the message home, that is why we are reaching out to students in this school especially the original inhabitants”, she stressed. 

On his part, the Principal Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada Mr. Victor Orifah who was represented by the Vice Principal Administration, Anze Audu called on the students not to allow their future to be jeopardised by anyone.

He said the students should always feel free to report any teacher who violate  them sexually.
