Senate Minority leader, Sen. George Akume has lampooned President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for the lackadaisical attitude it shows to the educational sector.

Sen. Akume, who made this criticism at the weekend, when he disbursed scholarship funds to over 200 Benue state students, noted that the sector gets the highest budgetary allocation yet, education is not accorded the necessary attention it deserves.

He also regretted at the on-going strike by primary school teachers in the state over minimum wage, averring that governments at all levels should focus attention on welfare of teachers as well as improvement in educational facilities.

He commended the south-west part of the country for the attention they give to education and urged Benue government to tow the same line.

“Imagine, our primary school teachers have been on strike for months now. At the national level, the polytechnics have continued with their strike without government doing anything to resolve the issue”.

Sen. Akume explained that the scholarship scheme, which covers the entire state, is aimed at assisting the students in their educational pursuit.

The senate leader urged the recipients to make judicious use of the scholarship and shun exam malpractice, cultism and drug abuse.
