Kano state governor, Abba Yusuf has re-commissioned Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital, closed and allegedly sold by the immediate past administration in the state.
Speaking at the re-commissioning ceremony, held at the hospital’s premises in Kano on Sunday, the governor said he is happy to fulfill the promise he made during his election campaigns.
Mr Yusuf recalled that “despite several appeal by the community, the hospital was sold by the previous administration to a crony and a lot of equipment were stolen.”
According to him, the situation had inflicted untold hardship on the people of the state, especially parents and children, forcing them to seek for paediatric services elsewhere.
He stated that now he is a happy man as he fulfilled the promise of recovering the people’s property and re-commissioned it for the benefit of the state and its neighborhood.
He pointed out that “the medical facility, established in 1990, had 86 bed capacity, receive 3000-5000 outpatients in a day and delivers free admission, outpatient services, surgical, immunization and nutritional services.
“The hospital is also a research centre which students use in the course of their study. We promised to recover this hospital and re-commission it. Today is the day. This is a historic day,” he said.
The governor said the medical facility had been equiped with state-of-the-art equipment, calling on the medical personnel to make judicious use of the facility.
He warned the staff to be committed and dedicated in their duty as the government would no longer condone misconduct and laxity by the workers.
The governor restated the commitment of his administration to improve healthcare services in the state, expressing appreciation to the development partners that support the state.
In his remarks earlier, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran said the hospital had been revived to serve the entire people of the state.
According to him, the facility is very important to people, thanking the governor for fulfilling his promise to bring the facility back to life even before he celebrated his 100 days in office.
In a remark, the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero noted that when the hospital was functional, people felt the benefit, adding that “when it was closed, the people also felt the pain.
“Now it is now the responsibility of the people to maintain it to continue benefiting. Not only the responsibility of the government to continue maintaining it, we the people also have responsibility.
“While we thank the governor for this giant strides, we also call on the governor’s advisers to continue giving him good advices that would be beneficial to the people. If he succeed, you too succeed,” the Emir added.
