Residents of Byazhin, Kubwa in Abuja, have been complaining about disruption of water supply to the area due to ongoing rail project by the Federal Government.
While some expressed regret that the disruption had lasted for too long, others said it appeared that there was no end to the problem.
A resident of NAN Street, Byazhin- Kubwa, Mr. Sylvanus Wele, said that getting water for his household had been difficult since the commencement of the railway project.
He said that his family had resorted to patronising water vendors whose sources were not readily known.
“The problem has lingered for more than six months and we hear that the problem has to do with the railway project around this area.
“The water board promised to create an alternative source of potable water supply but that has not been done as we speak.
“We now resort to (sachet) pure water for drinking and local water vendors for washing; we only hope they will intensify effort to create an alternative source of water supply,’’ he said.
Samuel Aka, another resident, expressed similar complaint that the rail project ongoing around Kubwa was laudable but that should not affect an essential service like water for too long.
“We expect that by now they should have created an alternative for us, but the experience has been so frustrating,’’ he said.
Another resident, Ms Lola Sanni, said that she had resorted to consuming sachet water.
She urged the authorities to increase their efforts in solving the water problem in the area.
However, acting Director of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Water Board, Mr. Michael Adebayo, said the board was in the process of solving the problem.
He said that the water pipes serving Byazhin were disrupted by construction of rail lines around the area which was a project of the Federal Ministry of Transport.
“Our intention is to re-align the pipes to another source and we have prepared to start anytime soon.
“It is primarily a project by the ministry of transport and we have to collaborate with them in re-aligning the pipes to avoid future disruptions.
“The disruption also affects us because we are losing revenue, so we are ready to commence work,’’ he said. (NAN)
