USAID spends $3.5m on water, hygiene intervention in Kano, Jigawa

The United States Agency International Development (USAID) said, the amount of $3.5 million was spent under Water Improvement and Sanitation Enhancement (WISE) activities as intervention in Kano and Jigawa states.
This was disclosed by the Chief of Party Water Improvement and Sanitation Enhancement (WISE), Mr. Simeon Nyiakaa, while delivering his speech during the hand over of the projects to the benefiting communities, held at Manpower Development Institute Dutse.
He explained that, the three years project commenced on August 1 2021 with aims to reduce the occurrence and impact of waterborne diseases among targeted population especially children, women and the elderly in underserved and rural communities in Kano and Jigawa state.
According to him, the projects targeted 66,000 residents to have access to basic water and 123,000 persons to basic sanitation with 55 improved water supply system and 50 improved sanitation facilities in public institution including schools and primary healthcare centres.
He said: “Today I’m happy to announced some of WISE projects achievement as construction and rehabilitation of solar powered borehole and hand pumps at 98 facilities across the two states of Kano and Jigawa.”
While delivering his remarks, the Jigawa state governor Malam Umar Namadi, who was represented by the commissioner of water resources Ibrahim Garba Hannun Giwa commended WISE projects and urged other partners to emulate from them.
