Commonwealth: Athletes to camp at Edinburgh -AFN

Date:

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) yesterday said that 47 selected athletes for the 2014 Commonwealth Games would be camped in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Technical Director of AFN, Omatseye Nesiama, said  in Lagos that the athletes would embark on tour on the first week of July.

According to him, the Games are scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to Aug.3.

He said that the tour would further strengthen the athletes to meet the federation’s set standards for the Games.

“What we have from the Calabar trials is a tentative list to work with but it is not the final list.

“There is a plan to further prune the number to accommodate athletes that we can depend on,’’ Nesiama said.

He added that athletes who would remain fit to the last minute would be selected for the Games.

Nesiama, however, said that the athletes were being cautious of making the list.

According to him, an athlete may be good at trials only for the same athlete to perform poorly.

“We are looking at their psychology, skills and tenacity to make the final selection.

“We don’t want to be carried away by athletes’ short-lived performances that cannot withstand the tempo in the main event in making our choice,” Nesiama said.

He advised the athletes to keep up with their personal training to remain fit for the Games.
