By Lateef Ibrahim, Abuja

A high powered delegation of the Labour Party, LP, led by the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, yesterday with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to formally present the recent judgement of the Supreme Court, as it relates to its National Chairmanship position to the commission.

Dr Alex Otti, who is the only elected Governor on the platform of the LP, during the visit, submitted a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court ruling to INEC officials.

It will be recalled that a five-member panel of the Supreme Court had last week set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which earlier recognised the Julius Abure’s leadership of the LP.

The court emphasised that matters relating to party leadership are internal affairs, over which the judiciary has no jurisdiction.

The Governor explained that the meeting with INEC officials was intended to promote clarity, mutual understanding, and alignment between the party and the electoral body regarding the Labour Party’s current leadership structure.

The delegation of the LP was received at the INEC’s headquarters by the commission’s Acting Chairman, Mr Sam Olumekun and other National Commissioners.

The Chairman on INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has traveled to the Gambia to attend the ECONEC (ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions) meeting.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Olumekun reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to neutrality, transparency and adherence to the rule of law in carrying out its constitutional duties.
