Edo Assembly carpets media for addressing them APC legislators

Date:

Members of Edo State House of Assembly elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) have criticsed the media, especially the electronic media, for referring to them as “APC legislators’’.

The legislators are led by the Speaker of the assembly, Mr Uyi Igbe,

The Chairman, House committee on Information, Kabiru Adjoto, expressed the opinion of the legislators in Benin yesterday during plenary of the group at the Old Assembly Complex.

He said: “I want to correct an impression and the use of language in some media, especially the electronic media.

“The media should stop referring to us as APC lawmakers.

“We are not APC legislators but honourable members of the house elected on the APC platform by the people to represent them in Edo State House of Assembly.

“I am using this medium to inform the media and the public to address the legislators and Mr Speaker properly as honourable members of the house,” Adjoto said.

Also, the Majority leader, Mr Philip Shaibu, said the lawmakers were holding their plenary in the Old Assembly Complex sharing a fence with the Government House.

He said, “if we want to hold plenary in Government House, we would have used the executive chambers which is roomier.

Shaibu said he had watched with keen interest how the house was being addressed as APC lawmakers sitting in the Governor’s Office and described the development as misinformation.

He urged the media to use the right words where appropriate.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the assembly has been in crisis since June 9, following the suspension of four lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, Mr Festus Ebea.

The minority PDP legislators hold their plenary in the assembly complex, while the majority APC legislators sit at the Old Assembly Complex. (NAN)
