Recharging Lake Chad critical to war against terror in N/East – CDS

For the umpteenth time, talks on recharging the Lake Chad may soon resume as a fresh strategy in the war against terror involving the lake’s four owner-countries – Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, told newsmen in Maiduguri, Thursday that recharging the lake would clear all obstacles across the lake and, therefore, provide sufficient access to Navy troops navigate it and squeeze out all the terrorists infesting it.

“We are looking forward to holding another meeting on clearing all obstacles in the Lake Chad and recharging,” Gen. Musa declared, asserting, “Clearing and recharging the lake is very important to us in the war against insecurity.”

He stressed: “The military is interested in recharging the Lake Chad,” assuring, “In no distant future, that meeting will be held.”

Gen. Musa said recharging the lake is also critical to the four countries to facilitate the creation of employment to about 20 million unemployed youths in the countries, saying that about 50 million people in those countries rely on the lake for their economic activities.

The CDS was in Maiduguri to meet with the top military commanders in under the Operation Hadin Kai Theater Command to review strategies of confronting the renewed attacks by the terrorists on military formations and communities in Borno, Yobe and the entire North-East.
