The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Lance Corporal Akinyele Femi, who allegedly killed his wife and took his own life at the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, Niger State.
In a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 21 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, the Army confirmed that the couple was found dead in their apartment at Block fifteen, Room twenty four Corporals and Below Quarters in the cantonment.
Nwankwo explained that preliminary findings showed that the soldier had been on duty within the cantonment and had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before returning to his post.
However, shortly after, both he and his wife were discovered dead at their residence.
According to him, the remains of the deceased have been preserved, and an in-depth investigation has since commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
The Commander of the 21 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier-General Ezra Barkins, assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made public and that measures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future
