President Bola Tinubu has
sworn in the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan.
Amupitan’s appointment followed the expiration of the two-term tenure of his predecessor, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
His nomination by President Tinubu was approved by the National Council of State (NCS) about a fortnight ago and later confirmed by the Senate on October 16th.
The brief swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja about 1:45pm.
The National Economic Council meeting which was ongoing at the same venue was adjourned briefly for the ceremony to be conducted by PresidentTinubu.
Professor Amupitan turned up at the ceremony with his wife and four children, which was witnessed by top government functionaries, including the Vice President, Senate President, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and governors among others.
Soon after the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office were administered on the new INEC boss, President Tinubu took the stage to perform the inauguration.
In his brief remarks, the President admonished the new INEC helmsman to
approach his responsibility
with upmost patriotism, saying that electoral integrity must be protected.
“The process must be seen to be credible and transparent,” the President charged.
