Yobe Police record 145 criminal cases, arrest 240 suspects

The Yobe State Police Command recorded 145 criminal cases and arrested 240 suspects across the state in the last three months, the Commissioner of Police, Usman Jibrin Kamfani, has disclosed.
Kamfani made the disclosure during a press briefing in Damaturu, where he presented the command’s operational achievements and outlined measures being implemented to combat crime and protect lives and property.
According to him, the 145 cases comprised 16 murder cases, nine rape cases, one kidnapping case, two extortion cases involving threats of kidnapping, five armed robbery cases and 112 other offences.
He said 198 cases had resulted in convictions following investigation and prosecution, while two cases ended in acquittal. He added that 26 cases were pending before the courts, 10 remained under investigation and four case files were awaiting legal advice.
Kamfani added that the police operatives had also raided criminal hideouts and black spots across the state, leading to the arrest of 171 suspected drug dealers and users.
He said illicit drugs, including dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and other prohibited substances, as well as dangerous weapons, were recovered during the operations.
Emphasized that, the police operatives neutralised one suspect during an operation in Fika and arrested another in a separate incident.
He also disclosed that the command had arrested a suspect who allegedly travelled from Maiduguri with the intention of snatching vehicles after killing their owners.
According to Kamfani, the suspect confessed to the plan following his arrest.
The commissioner said the command had arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged fraud and misappropriation of ₦77 million.
He further disclosed that police had arrested a suspect found in possession of four rolls of high-voltage electrical cables suspected to have been vandalised.
He said operatives, acting on technical intelligence, had also arrested two suspects who allegedly threatened and extorted a total of ₦630,000 from two victims under the threat of kidnapping.
The suspects, he said, confessed during investigation, while the necessary legal action had been initiated.
He added that detectives had successfully investigated separate cases of culpable homicide, arrested the suspects and concluded investigations for prosecution.
Kamfani attributed the achievements to intelligence-led operations, prompt responses to reported crimes and collaboration with communities and other security stakeholders.
He urged residents to continue providing the police with timely and credible information, stressing that security remained a collective responsibility.
The commissioner also commended traditional rulers, sister security agencies, vigilante groups and the media for their cooperation in the fight against crime.
He expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Desu, for his support and leadership, as well as to Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for his moral and financial support for the command.
