His Royal Majesty AGABA’IDU Elaigwu Odogbo John, Ph.D, PFD, CON, Paramount Ruler of the Idoma Nation and Chairman, Idoma Area Traditional Council, has charged Idoma sons and daughters to embrace 2026 as a year of purposeful hope anchored on unity, economic self reliance, cultural pride and disciplined citizenship.
In his New Year broadcast delivered on 1 January 2026 and themed Keep Hope Alive, the monarch thanked Almighty God for preservation through 2025 and described the new year as a defining moment that calls for responsibility rather than complacency.
“I thank Almighty God, the Giver of life, for preserving us through the year 2025 and granting us the privilege of standing at the doorway of 2026 with hope in our hearts and duty upon our shoulders,” he said.
The Och’Idoma paid warm tribute to the traditional institution across the Kingdom, commending First Class, Second Class and Third Class Chiefs, ward and district heads, clan and kindred heads, and title holders whose quiet service continues to anchor peace, order and stability.
“Your wisdom and steady counsel continue to guide our people toward unity and peace,” he said, noting that societies endure through duty, restraint and consistency.
Reflecting on the lessons of the past year, the monarch acknowledged challenges experienced in parts of Idoma land while emphasising resilience, lawful vigilance and cooperation as the pathway forward. He reaffirmed the sanctity of life, declaring that “the life of every Idoma son and daughter is precious and must be defended with lawful courage and collective vigilance,” stressing that “peace is not a gift dropped into a community; peace is built.”
To strengthen community responsibility for safety, the Och’Idoma announced practical measures, directing that “every ward and clan within Idoma Kingdom shall activate a Community Peace and Security Committee under the guidance of the traditional institution, working strictly within the law and in cooperation with recognised security agencies.”
He also announced the establishment of an Idoma Peace Desk at the Palace to receive verified reports, support mediation and interface with authorities for timely intervention, warning leaders and citizens that “we must never trade truth for noise.”
Unity and reconciliation featured prominently as the monarch recalled dialogue platforms held during the year, including the Idoma National Peace and Unity Symposium in Otukpo and the Royal Banquet in Abuja, where elders, youths and professionals engaged in sober reflection. He stressed that progress rests on shared conscience rather than division, stating that “no one builds a great nation by insulting one another or competing in division. Greatness requires a shared conscience.” Families, kindreds and associations, he urged, must resolve disputes early and allow dialogue to guide relationships.
The Och’Idoma also honoured the memory of Idoma sons and daughters who passed on in the previous year, describing their lives as meaningful contributions to the collective journey of the Nation.
Extending royal consolation to bereaved families, he said, “your pain is known, your tears are seen. The Idoma Nation stands with you in this season of grief,” urging the people to honour the departed by preserving values, unity and dignity.
Culture occupied a central place in the broadcast, with the monarch recalling the First Idoma Cultural Reawakening Festival held on 23 December 2025. By royal proclamation, he reaffirmed that “23 December of every year shall be celebrated as Idoma Festival Day,” with activities commencing on 21 December and culminating at the Och’Idoma Square. He announced the constitution of an Idoma Festival Planning Council, the development of a Culture and Heritage Register and the launch of an Idoma Language Revival Programme through community classes, schools, radio content and learning materials, warning that “a people that abandons its language abandons its memory.”
On development priorities for 2026, the Och’Idoma outlined plans for an Idoma Education and Mentorship Initiative to identify talented students, provide structured mentorship and mobilise scholarships and learning resources.
He also announced an Idoma Skills and Enterprise Initiative focusing on agriculture, agro processing, building trades, fashion, creative industries, digital skills and small scale manufacturing. “Our youth must have skills that can feed families and build communities,” he said.
In a strong call for economic self reliance, the monarch urged internal economic solidarity among the people.
“Let Idoma people buy from Idoma businesses. Let us strengthen cooperatives and invest in value chains that keep wealth within our land,” he said, describing homegrown enterprise as central to communal prosperity.
He disclosed plans to convene an Idoma Development and Investment Roundtable in the first quarter of 2026 to prioritise bankable community projects and attract credible partners, while stressing that development must translate into improved roads, electricity, education support and health outreach.
The Och’Idoma also called for integrity and a renewed public conscience, warning that “a society that normalises dishonesty invites decline.” He urged transparent conduct and accountable service in both public and private life.
Addressing communication and public discourse, he appealed for restraint and responsibility, particularly on social media, urging Idoma sons and daughters to become “gatekeepers of our honour.” Criticism, he said, must be constructive and disagreement must not descend into hatred. He further announced plans for a structured Diaspora Engagement Framework to connect Idoma people abroad to education, investment, healthcare outreach and cultural promotion, stressing that the Idoma Nation remains one regardless of location.
With political activities expected in the year ahead, the monarch urged openness, restraint and peaceful participation, making it clear that no Idoma son or daughter should be excluded from the democratic space. “No one should be discouraged from offering themselves for service. Communities should allow all willing sons and daughters to present themselves, for it is through openness that the best may be identified,” he said. He further called on aspirants to reject violence and promote peace, while urging communities to assess leadership by integrity, conduct and service to the people. Traditional rulers, he reminded, must “open their doors to all who come in peace, remain fathers to all, and encourage civility, restraint, and unity.”
Turning to history, the Och’Idoma noted that 2026 marks one hundred and three years since the establishment of the Idoma Native Authority in 1923, describing the milestone as “not a mere commemoration of time, but a responsibility placed upon this generation to refine what was handed to us and to leave behind institutions that will serve future generations with dignity.”
Accordingly, he formally placed responsibility for the Century Plus remembrance on Ochetoha K’Idoma, the apex socio cultural body, working in consultation with the Palace and relevant stakeholders. “Accordingly, I call on Ochetoha K’Idoma, in consultation with the Palace and relevant stakeholders, to commence preparations for a befitting remembrance that reflects elegance, discipline, and purpose,” the monarch said, adding that the occasion must advance education, youth development, documentation and community progress, while strengthening the Och’Idoma Square as a central home of Idoma cultural life and a symbol of unity, continuity and pride.
Concluding the broadcast, the monarch called on all Idoma sons and daughters to renew their commitment to peace, unity, hard work, enterprise and respect for constituted authority.
“May peace return fully to our land. May unity take firm root in our hearts. May progress and prosperity be our portion in 2026,” he prayed, expressing confidence that with shared resolve and disciplined action, the year ahead would advance stability and progress across Idoma Nation.
