A former governorship aspirant and Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), chieftain in Kebbi State, Alhaji Lawali Dakingari, has defected to the All Progressives Congress, (APC), alongside thousands of his supporters in Suru Local Government Area.
Dakingari, who led 2,208 delegates from polling units across Suru LGA, was received at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi by Governor Nasir Idris and leaders of the APC.
Speaking during the event, Dakingari said the decision to leave the PDP was taken after consultations with his political associates and supporters.
He stated that the move was aimed at strengthening political participation and contributing to governance in the state.
“We have resolved to join the APC after wide consultations. Our decision reflects the collective position of our supporters and political structure,” he said.
He added that more defections from the PDP and other political parties are expected in the coming days, including former local government chairmen and political stakeholders who could not attend the event.
Reacting to the development, the APC Chairman in Kebbi State, Alhaji Abubakar Kana-Zuru, described the defection as a significant boost to the party.
He urged the new members to remain committed to party unity and mobilisation ahead of future political engagements.
Governor Nasir Idris, while welcoming the defectors, assured them of equal treatment within the party and called for sustained cooperation among members.
Commenting on the defection, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor of Kebbi State, Yahaya Sarki, said the development reflected growing confidence in the APC-led administration.
“The decision by Alhaji Lawali Dakingari and his supporters to join the APC shows that many political actors and communities are aligning with the direction of governance in Kebbi State,” Sarki said.
He added that the government would continue to prioritise inclusive governance and development across the state.
