The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has strongly condemned the recent triple bomb blasts in Maiduguri, Borno State, describing the attacks as “barbaric, cruel and devastating.”
In a press release issued on March 19, 2026, JNI expressed shock over the coordinated explosions which struck the popular Monday Market, the Post Office area, and near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital during Iftar and evening prayers on Monday, March 16.
The attacks reportedly claimed no fewer than 25 lives, with over 100 others injured, many said to be in critical condition.
The Islamic body noted that the incident represents a troubling resurgence of violence in the North-East, particularly at a time when insurgency activities were believed to be declining.
It warned that both security agencies and the public may have lowered their vigilance, a lapse allegedly exploited by ISWAP elements behind the attacks.
JNI described the recurring attacks in Borno and other parts of the country as alarming and unacceptable, lamenting what it termed the growing normalization of violence and loss of human life in Nigeria.
It called for a comprehensive review of security strategies, urging authorities to adapt to evolving tactics used by insurgents, including ambushes and coordinated assaults.
The organization further urged the Federal Government to take decisive and proactive measures to end the cycle of violence, including overhauling the nation’s security architecture and ensuring regular,
transparent updates on security operations. It also emphasized the need for stronger intelligence gathering, with active support from citizens.
Among its recommendations, JNI called for full compensation to families of victims and adequate medical care for the injured. It also appealed to Nigerians to intensify prayers during the Ramadan period, seeking divine intervention against insecurity.
JNI extended its condolences to the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, and families of those affected by the tragedy, praying for the repose of the victims’ souls and quick recovery for the injured.
