UNIJOS Killing: NANS Demands Presidential Panel from Bola Tinubu

Date:

The Lagos chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students has called on President Bola Tinubu to set up a presidential panel of inquiry into the killing of a University of Jos student, Abel Gershon.
Gershon, a 300-level Building student of University of Jos, died after sustaining injuries during the March 29 attack on the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Ridwan Ajayi, the student body described the incident as a reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security situation and urged the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action.
The association said the proposed panel should be mandated to identify those responsible, ensure their prosecution, and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
Gunmen had reportedly stormed the area on motorcycles, opening fire on residents in a densely populated neighbourhood known to house many students. While Gershon was initially reported to have survived, he later died at the intensive care unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital.
The death toll from the attack has risen to 33, with several victims succumbing to injuries while receiving treatment.
NANS also commended Babajide Sanwo-Olu for facilitating the evacuation of Lagos students from the affected area, describing the move as timely and commendable.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, the group insisted that the killing must not go unpunished, stressing that Nigerian students deserve safety both on campus and in host communities.
