History was made in Idah Local Government recently as hundreds of runners took to the streets for the inaugural Idah 5km race, an event residents described as “something that has never happened before.”
Organized by the Makoji Kelvin Ibrahim Foundation, MKIF, the race attracted athletes from across Kogi State and beyond, turning the community into a hub of energy, unity, and hope.
For many participants, it was more than a competition.
Yunusa Wasila said she drew strength from her personal goals during the run. “I refused to give up. I’m proud I finished. It was challenging but inspiring,” she said.
Overall winner Ahanna Miracle crossed the finish line in 16 minutes 47 seconds. “I ran for the spirit of sportsmanship,” he said, as cheers erupted from the crowd.
Ojimaojo Joseph, who finished 3rd, thanked MKIF founder Makoji Kelvin Ibrahim for “the work he has been doing for the people of Idah,” noting the race reflects a broader push for youth empowerment.
First female finisher Aishat Muhammed said words of encouragement from her parents kept her going. “Their advice stayed with me till the end,” she said.
David Stephen urged young people to stay consistent. “Keep improving, keep training. Preparation will meet opportunity someday,” he said.
Speaking at the flag-off, MKIF founder Makoji Kelvin Ibrahim said the race is part of the “Run for Idah, Run for Hope” initiative aimed at promoting unity and healthy living among youths.
He noted this is the foundation’s third major intervention in Idah, after The Bridge Nigeria Summer Youth Camp and the Iye Women’s Network.
“Record your personal best. Remember, participation itself makes you a winner,” he told the runners.
Chairman of the Organising Committee for the race, HRH Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, Ohiomogbo Ata Igala, charged participants to run with discipline.
“There is no shortcut to success, and sports helps build discipline. If you get to the end, you have won. You are all part of history today,” he said.
The race ended with an award ceremony:
– 1st Place: Ahanna Miracle — ₦500,000
– 2nd Place: Stephen Owolabi — ₦350,000
– 3rd Place: Ojimaojo Joseph — ₦150,000
-1st Female: Muhammed Aishat Nna — ₦100,000
The foundation said the prizes reflect its commitment to rewarding excellence and nurturing athletic talent in the region.
