From Mustapha Adamu, Kano
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced preparations for the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency by-election in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.
The election is scheduled to hold on September 19, 2026, following the vacancy created by the movement of the former lawmaker representing the constituency to the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency.
The federal constituency by-election became necessary following the death of the former lawmaker, Hassan Danjuma. Subsequently, the then member representing Dawakin Kudu State Constituency contested the federal constituency seat, leaving the state assembly position vacant.
Addressing journalists at the INEC headquarters in Kano on Wednesday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ambassador Abdu Zango, said the commission had put necessary measures in place to ensure a peaceful, credible and transparent election.
Zango said political parties conducted their primaries between August 21 and 25, 2026, while the submission of relevant nomination forms is part of the electoral timetable.
He added that September 10 had been fixed as the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their polling agents.
According to the REC, political campaigns will officially end on September 17, two days before the election.
Zango disclosed that the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency has 15 registration areas, 303 polling units and 162,445 registered voters.
He assured residents and other stakeholders that INEC was fully prepared for the election, noting that both sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials were already available.
“INEC is ready for a peaceful, credible and transparent election. We have done it before and will do it again this time.
“We already have our sensitive and non-sensitive materials for the election. I assure the general public that we are ready for the exercise,” he said.
The commission urged political parties, candidates, voters and other stakeholders to support efforts to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
