The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness, strengthening internal oversight, and reinforcing discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.

The restructuring, according to a statement issued on Monday, is intended to refocus the unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a credible internal accountability mechanism within the Force.

Under the new framework, the Monitoring Unit has been streamlined and strengthened to improve proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across commands, formations, and departments.

The reform also harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.

As part of the reorganisation, the IGP approved a leadership transition, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar, as Head of the Police Monitoring Unit.

Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Police Commands.

He played key roles in high-profile investigations and collaborated with state authorities to modernise investigative processes and enhance operational efficiency.

He is described by colleagues as a professional officer committed to transparency and community-oriented policing.

The IGP said the reform is designed to entrench professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the Force, noting that the Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the delivery of a more accountable, professional, and citizen-focused policing system.

The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
